Report Predicts Possible Teaching Shortage as Many Teachers Prepare for Retirement
4/7/2009

According to an April 7, 2009 article from The New York Times, a report from the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future indicates that the U.S. could face a serious teacher shortage within the next 4 years. A large volume of anticipated teacher retirements, coupled with high attrition rates among new teachers, is the reason for the predicted shortage of qualified teachers. The report suggests that new teachers are leaving due to unsatisfactory pay and working conditions, while veteran teachers are being lost due to retirement system requirements. One possible solution mentioned in the report is the creation of learning teams, where veteran teachers remain in the system and serve as mentors to new teachers.

The article is available at the Web site of The New York Times.
