A March 10, 2009 USA Today article reports that, across the country, school districts are seeing a surge in the number of substitute teacher applications received. Administrators have also noticed a corresponding increase in the number of alternative certifications from individuals who are changing careers. Believed to be in large part a result of rising unemployment, the marked increase in volume has prompted some school districts to stop accepting new applications. A recent survey indicates that, in general, rural school districts are more likely to continue accepting applications for substitute teachers than are their urban and suburban counterparts.
