According to a March 2, 2009 article from MSNBC, there is an increasing number of homeless students in classrooms across the country. A January 2008 survey, which took place prior to much of the current economic turmoil, estimates that about 40% of homeless families include children who are minors. Some research indicates that homeless students are only half as likely as their peers to graduate from high school. Although schools receive federal funding to provide services for homeless students, the current increase in unemployment and home foreclosures is making it difficult to meet the existing need. The recently-passed federal stimulus package will make some additional money available to schools.
