According to a January 19, 2009 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, as of July 1st, a record number of Illinois college students had applied for federal financial aid for the current (2008-09) academic year. More than 240,000 of those who applied for federal assistance are eligible for the Illinois Monetary Award Program (MAP), which is administered by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Nationwide, between the 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years, there was an 11% increase in the number of students who applied for financial aid. Large high school graduating classes, a greater number of students attending college, and the current economy are all contributing factors to the increase in application volume for college financial assistance.
