According to a January 14, 2009 article from The Associated Press, families with students who are planning to start college next fall will likely be impacted by the current economy. Loss of assets (for example, falling stock values), higher tuition costs and - for some - uncertain job security are all combining to place added pressure on the families of college-bound students. While state budgets (which are a factor in tuition levels at public universities) have not yet been finalized, the nationwide trend seems to be toward reduced funding. Although many private universities may try to limit their tuition increases in order to remain competitive, research indicates that approximately 80% of American college students attend public institutions.
