Gap Year Allows High School Graduates to Explore Interests Prior to Starting College
1/9/2009

A recent article from The Wall Street Journal reports that many high school graduates are choosing to postpone college for a year. Commonly referred to as "gappers," these students use the time between high school and college to further explore and fine-tune their interests in a setting outside the classroom. Prompted by an increased level of maturity and motivation that they have observed in gappers, high school counselors and college admission officers are now encouraging some students to first get accepted into their college of choice, and then defer admission for a year. Experts recommend that the gap year be well planned and scheduled, in order to gain the most benefits.

The article is available at the Web site of The Wall Street Journal.
