According to a January 4, 2009 USA Today article, the number of home-schooled children in the USA continues to rise. The Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics reports that, since they began keeping records in 1999, the number of children who receive home schooling has increased nearly 75%. The top reasons listed by parents for choosing to school their children at home include religious or moral considerations, finances, and the desire to teach their children using a nontraditional approach. While the majority of home schooling parents follow a standard curriculum, a growing number are considered "unschoolers" because they view standardized testing and methods as counterproductive to a quality education.
