A December 27, 2008 article from The New York Times reports that an increasing number of elementary and middle schools across the nation are including students in what had traditionally been "parent-teacher" conferences. Many schools are focusing more on what will benefit their students than on what has traditionally been done in the past. In some instances, the student actually takes the lead during the meeting, and additional family members (such as siblings and grandparents) are also welcome to attend. Including students in the process has resulted in a higher percentage of families attending the conferences, which fosters better communication between teachers and parents.
