A December 12, 2008 article from The Associated Press reports that, due to the current economy, after-school programs across the nation are being forced to either close their doors or significantly cut back on services in order to stay open. Limited funding from federal and state governments, cash-strapped families, and a decrease in the number of businesses able to make charitable donations have all combined to place after-school programs at risk. Some experts fear that, without structured programs to attend after school, many students will end up getting into trouble out on the streets.
