A December 1, 2008 article from the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the effects of the current economy are being reflected in enrollment figures at community colleges across the state of Illinois. Many adults are taking courses at community colleges in an effort to increase their chances of finding employment in a challenging job market. Some of the individuals returning to school are doing so because they are unemployed, while those who are currently working might be changing fields in order to avoid future lay-offs. In addition, more high school graduates are choosing to start their college careers at community colleges in order to save money.
