According to a November 20, 2008 USA Today article, the nation's economic struggles have impacted how - and, in some cases, if - high schools have planned this year's homecoming activities. Although the trend in recent years has been toward elaborate homecoming dances and activities, the current state of the economy has prompted many high schools, students and families to find ways to simplify and reduce costs. Rather than renting expensive ballrooms, more dances are taking place in the high school gymnasium. The services of professional party planners and limousine drivers are being bypassed, and students are making their own decorations and seeking food donations from area restaurants. There has been a marked increase in requests to organizations that provide formal dresses for those who would not otherwise be able to afford one. Some schools have even had to cancel the homecoming dance, because they could not sell enough tickets to cover costs.
