An October 21, 2008 U.S. News & World Report article provides tips for students who are seeking scholarships during a time when the state of the economy has increased the level of competition for financial assistance that does not need to be repaid. In order to place themselves in the best position to receive scholarships, experts recommend that students: 1) submit applications for college admission, as well as scholarships, as early as possible; 2) investigate educational benefits that might be offered through employers; 3) consider less-expensive colleges (to make the receipt of scholarships less crucial); 4) apply to colleges where the student's high school grade point average or other abilities will make him or her stand out from other applicants (to increase the possibility of receiving institutional merit awards); 5) file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early in January as possible; and 6) communicate with the college's financial aid office if the family has experienced changes in their financial situation (for example, unemployment).
