Schools Sometimes at Odds with Families over Dress Codes
10/20/2008

An October 18, 2008 MSNBC article reports that, across the country, families are protesting the enforcement of school dress codes. An increasing number of cases are finding their way to court as formal dress codes and/or mandatory school uniforms have become common policies. Proponents of strict dress codes contend that such policies make for safer school environments by reducing violence, bullying and potential gang activity. Some parents, however, argue that the policies are so restrictive (for example, prohibiting certain colors that might be affiliated with a local gang) that it makes purchasing an acceptable wardrobe difficult.

The article is available at the MSNBC Web site.
