According to a July 22, 2008 USA Today article, a growing number of colleges are choosing to remove trays from their campus cafeterias. Without the trays, students are less likely to waste food by selecting more items than they will actually be able to eat. Less waste will assist college food service budgets, as well as reduce the time and resources (both environmental and human) needed to wash dishes and trays. The volume of wasted food has decreased by as much as 50% at campuses that have already done away with cafeteria trays, and some campuses are saving thousands of gallons of water each month.
