According to a July 11, 2008 article from The New York Times, the rising cost of gasoline is prompting many college students to reduce their commuting expenses by taking more classes online. Some colleges are also switching to a four-day week in an attempt to help students and faculty drive less. Students attending colleges with limited online offerings may have to make difficult choices regarding how often they can afford to drive to campus each week. A significant challenge being faced by some college students is the fact that, in many rural communities, an infrastructure for high-speed Internet connections does not exist. Without access to such connections, taking classes online may not be a viable option.
