A July 9, 2008 USA Today article reports that, as the cost for traditional college textbooks continues to rise, an increasing number of students and professors are utilizing free materials that are available online. These 'open textbooks' are licensed in a manner that allows users to print, download and/or customize any portion of the text. Advocates are encouraging college professors to consider using open textbook materials for their courses, and also to produce their own texts.
