A July 1, 2008 article from the Peoria Journal Star (Peoria, Illinois) announces that, under a new GI Bill that was recently signed into law, veterans who have served at least three years of active duty since September 11, 2001 will receive increased benefits to help them fund their college education. Individuals who have served less than three years will receive benefits based on a sliding scale that factors in the amount of time actually spent on active duty. GI Bill benefits (which will pay up to the equivalent of four years' full tuition at the most expensive state college, as well as a housing stipend and some living expenses) will be available for use up to 15 years after veterans leave the military. Veterans will have the option of transferring unused benefits to immediate family members.
The article is available at the Web site of the Peoria Journal Star.
