A June 18, 2008 USA Today article reports that taking a 'gap year' prior to starting college is growing increasingly popular among high school graduates. Typically, gap years are used to travel or do service work. The practice has been common in other countries for many years, and seems to have recently started to take hold in the United States. Some educators are supporting the idea - 'gap year fairs' have been held for high school students in a handful of metropolitan areas, and Princeton University plan to implement a 'bridge year' program that allows admitted students to perform service work overseas prior to enrolling in classes. Proponents contend that students who have taken a gap year tend to arrive on the college campus more motivated, focused and mature.
