According to a June 9, 2008 article from the Chicago Sun-Times, colleges in Illinois are seeing a significant increase in the number of students who choose to major in the performing arts. Although business majors still outnumber other students by a nearly 2-to-1 ratio, performing arts majors have more than doubled since 1997. Some experts believe the renewed focus on the arts stems from a shift in society - particularly, the economy - which places in high demand individuals with the training and skills to solve problems creatively.
