Illinois celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week from May 4th through May 10th, and National Teacher Day on Tuesday, May 6th. In a Press Release issued on May 4th, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) encourages "students, parents, administrators and communities to honor the state's more than 130,000 full- and part-time public school teachers" during this week.
For the second year in a row, in 2007, Illinois was recognized for having the fourth highest number of teachers achieving National Board Certification, the profession's highest credential.
The Illinois Teacher of the Year for 2008-09 will be named at the Those Who Excel banquet on Saturday, October 18th in Peoria.
