A March 24, 2008 article from The State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois) reports that the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is proposing rules that would place different calorie restrictions on school cafeteria menus, based upon the age of the student. Because they are older and require more calories, students in grades six through eight would be offered choices with slightly higher calories than would students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The proposed rules build upon the 2006 junk food ban, which was approved in an effort to instill children with the ability to make healthier lifestyle choices. A 45-day public comment period regarding the proposed rules will take place, after which ISBE members will determine if changes should be made to the proposal before it is sent to the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules.
