High School Students Less Familiar with Historical and Cultural References
3/3/2008

According to a February 26, 2008 USA Today article, many high school students are unfamiliar with historical and cultural references that in previous years had been considered basic to a complete education. The authors of a recently-released study indicate that the current focus on reading and mathematics is making it more difficult for students to learn about other important topics in school. Most of the students included in the study did an average job with history questions, and failed items dealing with literature. The study indicates that students performed well on the topics that are covered in schools, but suggests that more history and literature should be included in school curriculums.
