A January 13, 2008 USA Today article highlights a teacher who has been named a member of the 2007 All-USA Teacher Team. Valorie Lewis, a teacher in Oklahoma, draws upon her own childhood experiences to help her connect with her students. Because she grew up in poverty, she understands the situations faced by many of her students. She strives to teach her students to value and respect others, and believes any child can grow to be a successful adult if given the right environment and opportunities.
