Parents and Other Adults Challenge the Changing Face of School Recess
12/14/2007

A December 14, 2007 article from The New York Times reports that, across the nation, parents and other interested adults are voicing concerns over the manner in which recess has changed at many elementary schools. Activities such as kickball and soccer are increasingly prohibited, in order to prevent children from being physically or emotionally hurt. Some school administrators will allow sports to be played, but only if students do not keep track of the score. Fearing that traditional recess will soon become a thing of the past, several organizations have banned together to sponsor a Rescuing Recess campaign. Advocates of the campaign believe that, rather than being harmful, schoolground competition helps to teach children important social skills.

The article is available at the Web site of The New York Times.
