A November 28, 2007 article from The Associated Press reports that U.S. fourth-graders who took a global reading test in 2006 scored lower than students from ten other countries. When the same test was administered in 2001, only three other countries scored higher than the U.S. Even though more countries scored higher, U.S. student scores were still above the international average.
The article is available at the NBC-5 (Chicago) Web site. A statement regarding the test results, from U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, can be found at the U.S. Department of Education Web site.
