Survey Indicates "Helicopter Parents" Are on the Rise at Colleges
11/5/2007

A November 5, 2007 article from The Associated Press reports that, according to the National Survey of Student Engagement, the number of 'helicopter parents' is on the rise at college campuses across the country. The term 'helicopter parent' is used to describe parents who are highly involved in their students' lives, sometimes to the point of contacting the college to complain about roommates or grades on the student's behalf. Some experts speculate that the availability of technology, such as cell phones and e-mail, has contributed to parents being more involved in college students' lives. While educators encourage parents to be supportive and interested, they contend that too much parental involvement may prevent college students from gaining their independence.

The article is available at the NBC5 (Chicago) Web site.
