According to an October 10, 2007 article from The Associated Press, the degree to which parents participate in school life has a greater impact on student achievement than does the type of school (public or private) attended. Based on results of a recent study from the Center on Education Policy, there is minimal difference in achievement rates between 12th grade students attending public or private high schools when parental participation is considered. Some educators are concerned that the study did not account for any differences in drop-out rates that might exist between public and private schools, because only those students who made it to 12th grade were included. Others view the results of the study as an indication that more resources should be devoted to encouraging parents to become involved in their children's education.
