A September 18, 2007 USA Today article reports that, because it reduces the amount of time available for studying, playing video games can have a negative impact on a student's grade point average (GPA). Based on the results of a National Bureau of Economic Research study that took place during 2000 and 2001, the article indicates that college students with roommates who had video games on campus studied an average of 40 minutes less per day and had GPAs that were 0.241 points lower (on a 4.0 scale) than their peers. The study's authors believe their results demonstrate the important role that studying plays in academic success.
