According to a September 7, 2007 article from The Associated Press, the number of students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are taking classes via "virtual schooling" is on the rise. Across the nation, more than 170 virtual charter schools and 25 state-affiliated programs are available for students. Advocates of virtual schooling believe that, through technologies such as e-mail, instant messaging and chat rooms, students achieve more because they receive more individual attention from the teacher. Some experts, however, question whether student's social development will suffer if they are not part of a traditional school environment.
