A September 4, 2007 article from The State Journal-Register (Springfield, Illinois) reports that several colleges in central Illinois are utilizing text messaging technology as part of their alert system. Students and college employees can sign up to receive text messages in the event of a campus emergency. Since most students always carry their cell phones with them, campus administrators view text messaging as an ideal way to be in contact with students at all times.
