Authenticity Trumps Perfection on College Admission Applications
8/23/2007

According to an August 22, 2007 article from The Associated Press, college admission officers are increasingly looking for an element of authenticity when reviewing applications from prospective students. Avoiding robot-like perfectionism, independent college counselors are advising their clients to show their unique human side. Even small misspellings or 'typos' are viewed as a potential plus, rather than a costly mistake. Although the decreased emphasis on perfection would seemingly reduce student stress levels, some find it difficult to change habits that have been instilled in them for years. Ironically, the very process of trying to look authentic may have an unwanted result: the overzealous applicant might come across as insincere. Ultimately, college admission officers are looking for honest, humble students who can express what they have learned from their life experiences.
