An August 22, 2007 article from Inside Higher Ed discusses a current trend where college students are furnishing their residence hall rooms more elaborately than in the past. While not the norm, some students equip their rooms with flat screen televisions and other electronic gadgets. Retail stores market directly to college students this time of year, enticing them with advertising campaigns that spotlight the latest "must have" items. Online social networking sites, such as Facebook, allow future roommates to coordinate residence hall room color schemes months in advance. Responding to students' desires to have more input in their room decor, some colleges are offering reduced-price rooms that are completely empty so that students can provide all of their own furnishings.
