College Students are Common Targets for Identity Theft
8/21/2007

According to an August 21, 2007 CBS News article, college students are often targeted for identity theft. Data from the Federal Trade Commission indicates that nearly one-third of all identity theft victims are between the ages of 18 and 29. Experts believe that college students are viewed as prime targets because they may be perceived as naive, they are often inundated with credit card offers, and they may be less likely to regularly examine their financial records (e.g., balancing their checkbooks and reviewing credit card statements for unauthorized purchases). The article provides tips for parents to help their students avoid becoming identity theft victims.

The article is available at the CBS News Web site.
