Preventing Students from Becoming Overscheduled
8/2/2007

An August 1, 2007 article from The Associated Press provides families with suggestions to prevent students from becoming overscheduled. With increasing social pressure for students to be high achievers, some parents fear others will judge them if their children are not highly active. Experts, however, indicate that overscheduling children can lead to frustration and burn-out. Children need unstructured time to develop their creativity, as well as make new friends on their own. The article suggests that parents encourage their children to participate in no more than one athletic activity and one non-athletic activity at a time, and to try to keep at least one or two days per week free from any regularly-scheduled activities.

The article, which is part of a "Back to School" series, is available at the NBC5 Web site.
