According to a July 1, 2007 USA Today article, fewer new schools in the United States are being named after historical or civic figures. The latest trend seems to be naming schools after natural objects, such as animals, trees and bodies of water. One possible explanation for this change is the fact that controversy sometimes arises over the discussion of which historical figures are worthy of having a school named after them. The study examined school names in seven different states.
