An op-ed piece from U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, which appeared in the June 9, 2007 edition of the Washington Post, discusses reasons why national test standards would not improve student achievement. Secretary Spellings does not advocate development of a national test that would be created by the federal government. She believes the government's role in education should be to provide information, which states and school districts can use to develop systems and standards that will work best in their local communities.
The op-ed piece may be viewed at the U.S. Department of Education Web site.
