An April 23, 2007 article from the Kane County edition of the Daily Herald (Chicago suburbs) profiles a homeless teen in Elgin, Illinois, who is striving to complete her high school education and then attend college. According to the article, in 2005 there were over 18,600 homeless students who attended Illinois public schools. The No Child Left Behind law requires school districts to track the enrollment of homeless students, assign a contact person for those who are struggling, make efforts to keep students in the school they most recently attended, and provide busing. For a variety of reasons, school administrators sometimes have a difficult time identifying students as homeless.
