Financial Aid for a College Education has been updated with information applicable for the 2007-08 academic year. We hope you find it to be a useful resource as you plan, organize, and conduct your workshops.
The design of this presentation will make it a useful tool as you prepare for a financial aid workshops. Key points are included in the Notes view of the PowerPoint. A more detailed set of talking points has also been developed to provide more information during your presentation. This can be viewed through the View Mode in PowerPoint's under "Notes Page".
You may want to devote your entire workshop to the topic of financial aid. If, however, you want to expand the topics, logical areas of information to add to your workshop may include general college selection and admission information. This can range from very detail-oriented school descriptions, to entrance exams, to helpful suggestions on adapting to college life.
Accompanying visual materials always add an effective dimension to a presentation. If you choose to use the electronic PowerPoint format (Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT versions), consider copying these pages to provide as a handout for your audience.
Your financial aid presentation should be designed to provide financial aid information to students and parents who come from a variety of backgrounds. The materials in the presentation will work with small or large audiences. Be prepared to address the needs of students who are planning to attend four-year public or private universities, local community colleges, or trade/technical schools. Most participants will be junior and senior high school students and their families, but you may also want to consider inviting sophomore and freshman students and their families so they can start to plan early for postsecondary education. Adult students who plan to return to school might also be invited.
Finally, plan your workshop with a schedule, a set of objectives, and an understanding of the needs of your participants. You will want your students and their parents to be able to:
- recognize the financial aid programs available;
- understand the eligibility requirements and the application deadlines for the federal and state financial aid programs;
- complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with ease and understanding; and
- locate names, addresses, Web site addresses, and telephone numbers of agencies or individuals who can provide further assistance.
ISAC welcomes your comments and suggestions, as these serve as the basis for updating future versions of Financial Aid for a College Education.
Good luck at your workshop! Let us know how we can be of assistance.
